Clayton First semester 2006 (Day)
Synopsis: Component 1: A communicative course designed to further speaking and reading skills in German. The emphasis is on learning to use German correctly in discussing a variety of topics. Component 2 will focus on the highly productive artistic and intellectual developments in German and Austrian culture from the Fin du Siecle until the end or World War 2. This period covers styles such as Naturalism, Expressionism and 'Neue Sachlichkeit' as well as the rise of psychoanalysis or modern sociology.
Objectives: The aim of component 1 of this subject together with its sequel in semester 2 is to enhance their ability to recognise and analyse different types of texts in terms of their internal structures and their functions in the contexts in which they were produced and received; to develop their German language skills in the areas of reading, listening, speaking and writing; to acquire skills in researching, both individually and collaboratively, and in presenting the results of their research and reflection in both written and verbal form. After completion of component 2, students should also have a) gained an understanding of how intellectual life and cultural discourses evolved from 18th and 19th century traditions into their contemporary forms, b) developed appreciation of the artistic and intellectual achievements during this process c) achieved the ability to recognise styles, genres, intellectual preoccupations in their socio-historical contexts, and d) improved their oral and writing skills to engage in informed discussion of German culture, using appropriate terminology and applying the range of language skills pertinent to component 1.
Assessment: Essay (1000 words): 20% + Class paper: 15% + Test (45 min.): 15% + Exam (1 hour): 20% + 4 homework exercises: 20% + Oral assessment: 10%
