Synopsis: As for GES2010
Objectives: Upon satisfactory completion of this subject, students will be able to: 1. describe and understand the current major global environmental issues. 2. understand and discuss the cross-scale and cross disciplinary nature of global environmental change 3. show familiarity with global institutions, tools and mechanisms used to manage global environmental change 4. critically review an international environmental convention or protocol. 5. explore the nature of conflicts between environmental, political, social and economic interests associated with the development and implementation of global environmental management instruments 6. Students taking this unit at a third year level will be expected to demonstrate a greater level of understanding of theoretical and interpretive issues.
Assessment: Critical analysis of an international environmental mechanism or convention (900 words); 20%; Major Essay (900 words); 20%; Oral preseantation (15 minutes): 10%; Class Participation 10%; Examination 2 hours (2000 words): 40%
Contact Hours: One 2 hour lecture and a 1 hour tutorial per week. One full day trip.
