Synopsis: The unit will focus on global environmental issues and develop an understanding for the physical, biological and social issues driving global environmental policy and change and how this is inter-related with economic and political processes. The role of tools and mechanisms for managing global environmental change, such as Clean Development Mechanisms under the Kyoto Protocol, will be used to explore the possibilities and challenges facing environmentalists, scientists, politicians and the general public This subject will critically assess cross-scale and cross disciplinary components of environmental management through the use of debates, excursions and case studies

Objectives: Upon satisfactory completion of this subject, students will be able to: 1. describe and understand the current major global environmental issues. 2. understand and discuss the cross-scale and cross disciplinary nature of global environmental change 3. show familiarity with global institutions, tools and mechanisms used to manage global environmental change 4. critically review an international environmental convention or protocol. 5. explore the nature of conflicts between environmental, political, social and economic interests associated with the development and implementation of global environmental management instruments

Assessment: Critical analysis of an international environmental mechanism or convention (900 words); 20%; Major Essay (900 words); 20%; Oral preseantation (15 minutes): 10%; Class Participation 10%; Examination 2 hours (2000 words): 40%

Contact Hours: One 2 hour lecture and a 1 hour tutorial per week. One full day trip.
