Synopsis: The environment in which software is developed and used needs to be understood in order to make the most effective use of the capabilities of the underlying operating system. Topics include: Processes and threads: interprocess communication, scheduling. Deadlock: detection, prevention, avoidance. Memory management: allocation, swapping, virtual memory. Input/output principles and examples. File systems. Multimedia support: audio, video. Security: authentication, cryptography, common attacks, principles of secure system administration. Case studies: Characteristics of major PC operating systems
Assessment: Assignments: 30% Examination (3 hours): 70%
Contact Hours: 4 hours per week
