Synopsis: The lectures, on-line discussion, and field placements develop a range of professional skills and acquaint students with issues of professional ethics and practice in counselling.
Objectives: The broad aims of this unit are for you to develop an understanding of the ethical, legal and moral obligations of professional counsellors; to demonstrate comprehension of the codes of ethics for counsellors for relevant regions of practice; to demonstrate implementation of ethical principles in field practice; to develop and make evident appropriate decision-making processes regarding ethical dilemmas in counselling; and to determine the limits of your professional competency and be ready to make appropriate specialist referrals.
Assessment: Essay on ethical issues in counselling practice (3000 words): 30% + Written case reports (3000 words): 30% + Supervisor Evaluations (equivalent 2000 words): 40% (comprising 30% Field supervisor + 10% University supervisor)

Prerequisites: EDF6531
