Synopsis: The unit is designed to introduce students to the central approaches to counselling and psychotherapy; to enable the learning and practice of skills in a systematic manner; to engage students in a critical appraisal of their performance as counsellors; to apply information about the therapeutic alliance and other relevant strategies for helping clients in counselling therapy; to cultivate sensitivity to other people's ways and preferences, cultural or personal. To prompt students to consider their own values and style and how that may affect the success of their counselling.

Assessment: Assessment 1: Self-appraisal of Therapeutic Practice (5000 words): 60%; and Assessment 2: Critical evaluation of a major therapeutic orientation (3000 words): 40%
Contact Hours: 3 hours per week
Off-campus attendance requirements: Off-campus students must attend a three day Residential School
