Synopsis: This unit follows thematically the concepts and issues presented in EDF2121 and EDF2126 and complements the experiences of sports injury prevention. Principles of coaching and their application to a variety of sports will feature. Analysis of sports training factors and implementing coaching instruction specific to the age of the participants and level of competition will occur.

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit, students should have developed knowledge and understanding of the role and responsibilities of the coach in a variety of sports settings; appropriate methods of improving the performance of the athlete; and factors that influence the ability of the athlete to perform safely and effectively. Students should be able to apply these theoretical concepts and demonstrate skills in planning a program based on modern coaching theory, implementing and evaluating a basic coaching program for a specific sport, and recognition of sports training factors relative to the age of the participants and level of competition.

Assessment: Practical assessment of sports coaching methods: (1600 words equivalent): 40% + Examination (2400 words equivalent): 60%
