Synopsis: Statistical concepts and methods relevant to design, data collection, statistical analysis and presentation of public health research projects, data analysis using statistical software, analysis strategy formulation and critical aspects of statistical aspects of published journal articles. Sampling, sampling size issues, essential components of liners, logistics and proportional regression, methods for correlated data, meta analysis, software considerations and communication of statistical results.
Objectives: On completion of this subject, students will be able to: 1. describe the statistical principles of sample selection and a range of multi-variable methods of statistical analyses typically encountered in public health research; 2. proficiently plan and perform statistical analyses using a software package; 3. recognise the statistical issues in the design and analysis of a public health research project and propose a strategy for their implementation; 4. critically appraise the statistical methodology in public health research articles; and 5. coherently explain the statistical concepts and results in written and oral formats.
