Course description

This masters program recognises the fundamental importance of risk management in today’s commercial world and seeks to provide graduates with extended skills in these areas. The course will prepare students for the increasingly complex risk management issues that they will face when employed in many areas of business and in government agencies. It also provides education in the area of risk management and related topics appropriate for practitioners seeking to meet professional education requirements or to update their knowledge in specific risk management areas. It is also suitable for people working in other business, financial planning or investment areas who regularly deal with risk management issues.

Entry requirements

Applicants need to have completed:

  • a pass degree or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution, or
  • an executive certificate offered by the faculty, or a Graduate Certificate in Risk Management, or
  • a Graduate Diploma in Risk Management with an average grade of credit or above.

Advanced standing

Candidates may be eligible for advanced standing for a maximum of six units considered to be equivalent to particular units completed at graduate level. Advanced standing is restricted to study completed in the last five years.

Candidates who have completed Monash's Graduate Diploma in Risk Management in the past five years will be eligible for eight units of credit (48 points).

Course structure

  1. Students must complete eight core units (48 points):

    • AFF4031 Principles of risk transfer
    • AFF5011 Issues in risk management
    • AFF5021 Case studies in risk management
    • AFF9020 Introduction to risk principles
    • AFF9770 Risk financing and treasury management
    • BTX4031 Insurance law
    • BTX9760 Risk control and the law
    • ETX9520 Quantitative methods for risk analysis
  2. Students must complete a further 24 points as follows:

    1. Four units (24 points) at levels 4000 or 5000 from any faculty across the university as nominated or subject to approval of the course director. The electives are to be chosen from 4000-level or 5000-level units. Subject to the course director’s approval, students may also enrol in AFF9010 (Research project in risk management) as one of their elective choices.

    2. Research dissertation (24 points):

      • AFF4060 Research methods (6 points)
      • AFF4061 Research methods (6 points)
      • AFF5190 Minor thesis (12 points)

Students who complete the research component with a distinction average would be eligible to apply for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy.
