Synopsis: Students are encouraged to question and explore the role of design in communicating and shaping experience. Projects are speculative in nature. Through research and practical application, students explore a range of design related topics including language and typography and the function of signs in contemporary media. The projects are designed to introduce students to issues and ideas relevant to design discourse. Students demonstrate a critical awareness of design and develop research methodology through class critique seminars.

Objectives: On completion of this unit, students will: 1.consider research as a strategy to develop and initiate concept development within their practical work; 2.reconcile both theoretical and formalist approaches of design to their personal interests and approaches; 3.use design toward artistic or discursive ends and engage its persuasive tactics for the sake of the expression of critical ideas; 4.analyze the relationship between written and visual language in order to understand the dynamics and intentions of communication; 5.appreciate basic design research and its connection with historical methodology; 6.understand and be able to apply the rules of occupational health and safety appropriate to the unit of study

Assessment: 3 minor projects: 90%. Journal: 10%

Contact Hours: 12 hours per week, including; 4 studio hours including: 1 hour lecture and 3 independent study hours
