Tapestry practice and theory 1B ( 6 points, SCA Band 1, 0.125 EFTSL)

Synopsis: This unit extends the introduction to the practice and theory of Tapestry as a means of contemporary creative expression. It adds to the focus on raising awareness of and providing the means to achieve an initial level of competence within the Tapestry discipline, while imparting a sound conceptual and technical basis for continuing study in that discipline. The safe handling of materials and equipment is emphasized as an essential part of all studio practice.

Objectives: On successful completion of this unit, students will: 1 have explored a number of specific tapestry techniques; 2 have gained some understanding of colour, surface, scale and composition; 3 have begun to explore issues about representation; 4 have developed skills and knowledge about studio practice; 5 understand and apply the principles of occupational health and safety practices in the studio

Assessment: Folio of studio work: 100%, of which at least 20% will be assessed before mid-semester.

Contact Hours: 12 hours per week, including six hours of taught studio and six hours of personal study and studio practice
