Tapestry practice and theory 1A ( 6 points, SCA Band 1, 0.125 EFTSL)

Synopsis: This unit introduces students to the practice and theory of Tapestry as a means of contemporary creative expression. It focuses on raising awareness of and providing the means to achieve an initial level of competence within the Tapestry discipline, while imparting a sound conceptual and technical basis for continuing study in that discipline. The safe handling of materials and equipment is emphasized as an essential part of all studio practice.

Objectives: On successful completion of this unit, students will: 1.have explored a wide range of processes and ideas - drawing, photography collage and related textile techniques; 2.have developed individual and personal responses to projects3.have considered their work within both historical and contemporary tapestry practice; 4.have basic skills in materials and structures appropriate to their personal visual expression; 5.understand and apply the principles of occupational health and safety practices in the studio

Assessment: Folio of studio work: 100%, of which at least 20% will be assessed before mid-semester.

Contact Hours: 12 hours per week, including four hours of taught studio and eight hours of personal study and studio practice

Prerequisites: Admission to an Art & Design course or permission

Corequisites: OHS1000
