Synopsis: (1) Language: Advanced study, through literary and official texts, of the stylistics of contemporary Polish political, economic and cultural discourses. Advanced translation and theory of translation. (2) Literature and society: Contemporary Polish drama, fiction and film in the context of (East) European postmodernism.
Objectives: On completion of the course, students (a) will be able to distinguish different types of contemporary Polish cultural discourses (political, economic, artistic); (b) be able to translate different discourse types into English; (c) have a command of the major trends in Polish Modernism and (d) an acquaintance with Polish post-war cinema.
Assessment: Language Test (1 hour): 30% + Written work (1000 words): 20% + Literature and society essay (2500 words): 50%
Contact Hours: 2 hours (2 x 1 hour lectures) per week
