Synopsis: (1) Language and business studies: A review of various aspects of contemporary Polish, including the language of business. (2) Literature and society: An introduction to major literary, social and political developments in Poland between 1947 and the post-communist years. (3) Comparative cultural studies of East European countries: A selection of texts will be studied to disclose the special social, political and cultural role of literature in central and eastern Europe. (4) Study and practice of translation.
Objectives: On completion of the course, students (a) will be proficient in analysing the stylistics of contemporary Polish texts, including those using the language of business, and a demonstrated ability of translating them into English, (b) will have a general command of the major social and cultural developments of Poland since 1947 in the context of Eastern Europe of the post-communist era.
Assessment: Language test (1.5 hours): 20% + Oral test (30 mins): 20% + Written (1000 words): 20% + Literature and society essay (1500 words): 40%
Contact Hours: 4 hours (2 x 1 hour lectures and 2 x 1 hour tutorials) per week
Prerequisites: VCE/HSC Polish or equivalent
