Synopsis: This unit consists of a selection of modules, each of which focuses on theory, research and practice issues pertaining to a major field of social welfare practice. Each module includes the ethical and legal dimensions of practice. Students will select one module from a choice of Anti-racist Practice, Disability, Child Protection or Violence against Women to research in-depth.
Objectives: On successful completion of this unit students will have developed: 1) An understanding of the main theories and significant practice issues and dilemmas in one major area of social welfare practice; 2) An awareness of the centrality of values, their own, and those of the clients and workers and the way in which these can colour perceptions of practice issues; 3) Skills in critical analysis and research methods in a specific practice context.
Assessment: Literature review (2000 words): 50% + Integrative assignment (2500 words): 50%
Contact Hours: 2 hour seminar per week
Prerequisites: SCW2303 and either SCW2304 or SCW2310
