Synopsis: This unit focuses attention on 'big picture' or macro welfare work. Its ultimate purpose is to impart skills and knowledge that will enable graduates to work with communities to eliminate disadvantage.
Objectives: On successful completion of this unit students will: 1) understand community development as a method of social welfare practice; become familiar with the application of community development models, values, skills, strategies and tactics; 2) participate in the identification, execution and/or evaluation of a community development response to a situation, problem or issue through a supervised 16-day field education placement in a community organisation; 3) demonstrate a capacity for reflective analysis of own practice.
Assessment: Plan (750 words): 20% + Workbook Assignment (3750 words): 60% + Placement Supervisor's Evaluation Report : 20% + This unit includes a 16-day supervised field education placement
Contact Hours: 2 hour weekly seminar, 16 day placement
Prerequisites: SCW1303 and SCSW1304 or equivalents
