Synopsis: Multi-slice CT: clinical principles including data acquisition and image reconstruction. CT protocols dealing with the head and neck, thorax, abdomen, spine and extremities. CT anatomy and CT pathology of common disease processes. CT angiography. Dose implications and dose optimisation strategies. Quality assurance.
Objectives: On the completion of this unit students will be able to: 1. communicate an understanding of the development of helical (spiral) CT scanners and the z-interpolation methods used in image recognition; 2. describe the development of multi-slice CT scanning and discuss its limitations and advantages; 3. describe the physical and imaging principles of multi-slice imaging, including data acquisition and image reconstruction (Volume Reading, Multi-Planar Reconstructions and Maximum Intensity Projections); 4. understand the major differences and advantages multi-slice has over single slice helical imaging; 5. communicate an understanding of the differences between single slice axial, helical and multi-slice CT approaches to imaging the thorax and abdomen and the extremities; 6. critically appraise and analyse technical and clinical issues associated with CT of the head in the adult and paediatric patient; 7. recognise anatomical structures and pathology on a range of CT images of the head and neck, abdomen, thorax, spine and extremities; 8. describe the basic multi-slice CT protocols, technical parameters, patient preparation and positioning associated with CT angiographic imaging; 9. appreciate the imaging techniques used for biopsy and drainage procedures performed under CT guidance; 10. communicate an understanding of the dose implications associated with multi-slice CT with particular reference to paediatrics; and 11. implement appropriate quality assurance measures.
Assessment: Written examination(3 hour): 60% + Image analysis examination (1 hour): 20% + Imaging essay (1000 words): 10% + Imaging laboratory report (1000 words): 10%
