Synopsis: Clinical experience in abdominal sonography examinations: protocols, techniques and protection strategies, patient and professional communication, image evaluation, organisational or legal obligations. Quality assurance procedures in respect to abdominal sonographic medical imaging systems. Additional experience in general radiography.

Objectives: On completion of this unit, students will be able to: 1. participate in a range of abdominal sonographic examinations; 2. recognise the sonographic appearances of abdominal organs and the sonographic appearance of common pathological processes affecting abdominal organs; 3. modify and adapt general and advanced radiographic methods, techniques and radiation protection strategies in relation to either: patient status, procedural variations, patient or professional communication, image evaluation, supplementary examination, organisational or legal obligations under supervision but to the level of a competent radiographer; 4. identify personal learning goals in respect to the development of clinically oriented ultrasound skills in the area of abdominal sonography of the adult patient; and 5. identify ongoing personal learning goals in respect to the continued development of professional expertise in general radiography.

Assessment: General radiography log reports: 15% + Clinical Skills' Assessments: 20% + Ultrasound case reports: 15% + Ultrasound log record: 5% + Clinical Ultrasound Skill Assessment: 15% + Professional Development Portfolio: 30%
