Nursing practice 2: Concepts and practice of nursing care ( 9 points, SCA Band 0, 0.188 EFTSL)

Synopsis: The unit builds on concepts introduced in NUR1101 incorporating a lifespan and holistic perspective for nursing care. It also aims to integrate concepts introduced in concurrent units such as microbiology, legal concepts and multi cultural nursing.

Objectives: Educational Objectives On completion of the unit, students are expected to: 1. describe the role of the nurse in supporting the activities of daily living for clients/patients; 2. demonstrate an understanding of physical, psychological and social changes following the onset of health problems; 3. develop beginning holistic therapeutic nursing skills for the care of clients/patients; 4. describe appropriate communication and personal interaction strategies in working with clients/patients and other health care professionals; 5. practice physical assessment skills in a simulated clinical environment; 6. plan, implement and evaluate care for selected clients using standard decision making frameworks; 7. identify and utilise culturally relevant and age specific nursing strategies that promote the independence, self esteem and dignity of clients; 8. develop an ability to integrate science knowledge with nursing practice. Clinical Objectives On completion of clinical practical experience, students are expected to be able to: 1. Demonstrate a satisfactory knowledge base for safe practice; 2. use the nursing process plan, deliver and evaluate care that is based upon the physical and developmental needs of the client/patient; 3. demonstrate a need for professional and personal accountability when providing nursing care; 4. recognise the legal and ethical implications of delivering nursing care to the individual client/patient; 5. demonstrate effective communication with clients/patients and other members of the nursing and health care team; 6. demonstrate learning development when documenting client/patient care; 7. consistently demonstrate a satisfactory level of psychomotor skills appropriate to the safe delivery of nursing care; 8. demonstrate an understanding of the role of all health team members in the care of the individual client/patient.

Assessment: Written clinical based assignment: 30% + Written examination: 50% + Class/tutorial assignment: 20% + Attendance at clinical placements is mandatory and students must pass both theoretical and clinical components in order to pass the unit.

Contact Hours: 6 hours per week (lectures, tutorials, labs) plus 150 hours clinical
