Synopsis: This unit introduces students to the fundamentals of nursing care for individuals and communities. It introduces students to a number of fundamental concepts, processes and skills required for nursing practice. The unit is designed for beginning students in a comprehensive undergraduate nursing program. It aims to develop knowledge and skills for the promotion of individual health, growth and development across the lifespan. The unit includes theoretical and practical information about nursing skills, concepts and processes in a clinical practice component.
Objectives: On completion of this unit, students should be able to: 1. describe the concept of health from biomedical, psychological, cultural and ecological perspectives; 2. begin to evaluate the concept of health needs or challenges for the normal individual or group over the lifespan; 3. perform selected basic nursing skills in a simulated environment using evidence-based nursing approach; 4. explain the role and levels of communication in the nurse-client relationship; 5. describe the roles of nurses and their relationships with other health care professionals through observation made in a clinical practice environment; 6. demonstrate skills for the assessment of health and development of individuals over the lifespan; and 7. accurately collect and record data for health profiles and/or health histories for either individuals, groups or communities.
Assessment: Written examination: 50% + Clinical fieldwork: 50% + Practical skills examination: pass/fail - students must pass this examination to pass the unit. Mandatory 100% attendance of laboratory
Contact Hours: 55 hours lectures, laboratories, self directed learning activities
