Synopsis: An overview of measures and issues in clinical research; sampling & inference; selecting items, reducing items & creating aggregate scores; inter-rater & intra-rater reliability; reliability & interval consistency of responses; assessing the validity of measures; responsiveness of measures to significant clinical change; strategies for gathering data; wording of questions & design of response categories; data entry & management & handling of missing data.
Objectives: On completion of this unit, students should be able to: 1. apply measurement principles and methods in the critical assessment; 2. develop measures employed in clinical and epidemiological research.
Assessment: Assignment (90%)+ Oral presentation (10%)
Contact Hours: 2 contact hours per week
