Synopsis: An introduction to descriptive & analytical epidemiology, demography, case-control studies, cohort studies, clinical trials, risk & causation, bias, confounding, health program evaluation & measurement theory.
Objectives: On completion of this unit, students should be able to: 1. explain the purposes of descriptive and analytical epidemiology; 2. explain the strengths and weaknesses of different epidemiological study designs; 3. critically appraise epidemiological papers from the epidemiological literature; 4. solve problems relating to the use of the principal epidemiological concepts, parameters and study designs; 5. explain the uses of epidemiology in the practice of public health.
