Clayton First semester 2005 (Day)
Synopsis: Vector analysis: gradient, divergence, curl; integration: line and multi-dimensional integrals including integration over curves, surfaces and solids; Ordinary differential equations: revision of first and second order constant coefficient differential equations, initial and boundary value problems, analytical and numerical approaches.
Objectives: On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to: demonstrate understanding of the key concepts of multivariable calculus; demonstrate understanding of the role of the gradient, divergence and curl; calculate line and surface integrals; demonstrate understanding of Stoke,'s and Green,'s theorems be able to classify and solve elementary first and second order ordinary differential equations; demonstrate understanding of basic numerical methods for solving ordinary differential equations; be able to relate mathematical methods in vector calculus and ordinary differential equations to specific materials engineering applications.
Assessment: Examination (2 hours) 46%; tests and assignments 54%
