Translation of Japanese Business Documents ( 6 points, SCA Band 1, 0.125 EFTSL)

Synopsis: Introduction to the various types of business writing encountered in paid employment (including letters, legal documents, internal memoranda, reports, notifications and pamphlets) especially the translation of such writings from Japanese into English and vice versa. The medium of instruction will be English and/or Japanese

Objectives: When completing the unit, students are expected: 1. to be familiar with the range of basic documents used in firms and other similar kinds of organisations in Japan and Australia; 2. to have several strategies for processing and translating documents from Japanese into English and vice versa; and 3. to have confidence to negotiate with clients about the translation of business documents.

Assessment: 1. Written Assignments 3500 words in total 60% 2. Examination one hour 40%

Contact Hours: 1.5 hours of lecture per week

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Japanese 10 or Japan Foundation's Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level 2 or equivalent, and English competency (a minimum of IELTS 6.5). Approval from the unit coordinator
