Synopsis: The primary focus is on the communication skills required for use in an Indonesian or Australian setting. Tutorials cover a broad introduction to the culture and geography of Indonesia as well as an introduction to strategies and skills required in learning a language. Practicals deal with the introduction and application of basic communication tasks with an emphasis on numeracy skills and immediate needs.

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit students will be able to: 1. Understand basic grammatical structures of the Indonesian language. 2. Consider cultural influences on the use of the Indonesian language. 3. Use Indonesian to communicate everyday needs with particular emphasis on introductions and family 4. Apply acquired learning skills to new language learning environments.5. Use the Internet and associated electronic tools to obtain information about aspects of language and culture related to Indonesia.

Assessment: 1.Spoken presentation 10 minutes 25%; 2.Cultural Journal (in English) (1,000 words): 15%; 3.Short tasks (500 words): 10%; 4.Written Examination: 2 hours 30%; 5.Spoken Exam 20 minutes 20%
