Synopsis: The unit will enable student to examine the key elements that influence and define the health of a population. It will allow them to recognise different types of health care systems and the specific characteristics that apply to the Australian health care system. Concepts of health promotion and the general role public health plays in determining the health of a population will be explained. The unit will look at key elements of health policy, quality in and access to health care and the role of healthcare professionals in the system. Students will also receive an introduction to research methods in the health promotion context and evidence-based practice in health care.
Objectives: By the completion of this unit, it is expected that the student will be able to: 1. define the key determinants and models of health; 2. classify health care systems and demonstrate the importance of quality, access to health services and good management in the efficient provision of health care; 3. apply an understanding of health and health services in the context of Australian society and the Australian health care system; 4. recognise the key elements that determine health policy; 5. understand the clinical relevance and implementation of health promotion; 6. appreciate the range of settings (clinic, community, society) in which health promotion activities take place and the range of relevant interventions (socio-environmental, behavioural and biomedical); 7. recognise the complexities of improving population health and how this is evaluated; and 8. appreciate basic epidemiological research methods that underpin health promotion activities.
Assessment: Tutorial participation: 10% + Examination (2 hours, short answer and MCQ): 40% + Written assignment (1500 words): 15% + Written assignment (literature review + 1000 words for task 2 + 1000 words for task 3): 35%
Contact Hours: 12 hours per week including contact time and private study, averaged over the 13 week semester - a total of 156 hours
