Synopsis: The unit will enable students to examine the key elements that influence and define the health of a population. It will allow them to recognise different types of health care systems and what specific characteristics apply to the Australian health care system. In this context concepts of health promotion and the general role public health plays in determining the health of a population will be explained. In terms of distinguishing systems and how they impact on the efficient of health care delivery the unit will look at key elements of health policy, quality in and access to health care. The key issue of health management will also be examined.

Objectives: Upon completion of this unit students will be able to: 1. define the key determinants and models of health; 2. explain the important role that health promotion plays in determining the health of a nation; 3. classify health care systems and demonstrate the importance of quality, access to health services and good management in the efficient provision of health care; 4. apply your understanding of health and health services in the context of the Australian health care system you will be working within; 5. recognise the complexities of improving population health and how this is evaluated; 6. recognise the key elements that determine health policy; 7. identify the basis of human rights in health care; and 8. enable students to demonstrate an understanding of the above concepts.

Assessment: Group class presentation (20 minutes): 25% + Tutorial participation: 15% + Essay: 35% + Multiple choice exam: 25%

Contact Hours: 6 hours of contact time (2 hour lecture, 2 hours interactive classes and 2 hours tutorial preparation time)
