Synopsis: This unit builds on the concepts introduced in EDF5448. The main focus of this unit will be to further development strategies and pedagogy with particular attention to the development and assessment of teaching materials for teaching English as a second language.

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to assess the language needs of English-as-a-second-language (ESL) students and plan through language-related goals and objectives. Students should also be able to develop materials and teaching activities which meet the diverse needs of ESL students, provide optimal conditions for language learning and evaluate the effectiveness of ESL programs. Students should have developed attitudes of valuing the diverse cultural and language backgrounds of ESL students and being sensitive to differences between the students' culture and that of the wider Australian community. Students should be able to work effectively with all staff members to promote a whole school approach to the language needs of ESL and non-English speaking background (NESB) students.

Assessment: Unit of work (4000 words) 40% + Class Participation 10% + An 80% attendance rate is required in order for students to participate fully in workshop activities + Teaching practice also forms a major part of the assessment for this unit. The unit of work is to be developed, trialed and evaluated as part of the teaching practicum. Students are required to teach the equivalent of at least 44 fifty minute supervised ESL lessons in classes of no fewer than four students and gain a satisfactory rating for their teaching practice.
