Synopsis: Digital image and video formats; redundancy in images; quantisation and predictive coding; motion compensation; transform coding; hybrid coding; visual psychophysics; vector quantisation; entropy or Huffman coding; subband coding; international standards; JPEG/JPEG2000, H.261/H.263, MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4.
Assessment: Examination (3 hours): 70% + Laboratory and assignment work: 30%
