Synopsis: The unit will review the structure of TCP/IP, the network interface layer. This will be followed by a detailed exposition of the design principles and implementation aspects of protocols in the IP and TCP layers, routing algorithms and routing protocol are discussed. The unit will also examine some of the major application protocols in the TCP/IP protocols suite (eg. DNS, DHCP, Telnet, TFTP, FTP, SMTP, NNTP). In addition, the Wireless LAN technologies and protocols are introduced with the aim of supporting mobile applications. Wireless LAN topologies and routing is discussed.

Objectives: At the completion of this unit, students should have 1. A detailed knowledge and understanding of all major protocols in TCP/IP; 2. An understanding of major issues in implementing the protocols; 3. An awareness of the latest developments in TCP/IP (eg. IPv6, IPSec, mulitcasting, VoIP, QoS, iSCSI); 4. The knowledge and skills to implement and manage wired and wireless LANs; 5. The knowledge and skills to implement and manage TCP/IP services within wired and wireless LANs.

Assessment: Assignments: 40%, Exam: 60%.

Prerequisites: CPE1007 or CPE2002, plus a further 12 points of Network Computing units.
