Synopsis: This unit focuses on the nutritional management of specified acute conditions. A one week lecture block will be followed by a program of nutritional assessment of patients, developments of their treatment plans, monitoring and outcome reporting over a 2 week practical placement. The specific topics include the mangagement and dietetic treatment of cystic fibrosis, allergy, infectious disease, burns and specialised paediatric patients.
Objectives: At the completion of the unit the students will have: 1. an understanding of the dietetics principles that are relevant in the medical management of - Cystic fibrosis - Allergy - Infectious disease - Burns - Specialist Paediatrics; and 2. a skill base which will include: - skill in nutrition assessment, treatment planning and patient monitoring in the acute conditions specified so that the students is competent on graduation to work in the area of nutrition and dietetics with safety and confidence. - the ability to work effectively within the organisation by appropriately managing available time, resource and personnel in completing tasks.
Assessment: Examination (3 hours): 40% + Clinical assignment: 20% + Objective Structured Clinical Examination: 40%
Prerequisites: Completion of years 1, 2, 3, and semester one year 4 Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics
Corequisites: BND4042 Program Planning
