Personality: Beyond the Persona ( 6 points, SCA Band 1, 0.125 EFTSL)

Synopsis: This unit will examine personality from a series of perspectives broadly represented by the psychoanalytic, phenomenological and humanistic approaches. Significant theorists representing these approaches will be studied and their theories evaluated and compared. Particular attention will be paid to Freud, Klein, Jung, Adler, Fromm and Horney; Frankl, Maslow and Rogers. The psychology of women will be explored as a discrete theory and non-Western approaches to personality, such as Buddhism, will be examined.

Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit students will be able to demonstrate: 1. familiarity with the major theoretical approaches to personality and individual differences. 2. an understanding of the historical and social contexts in which these theoretical approaches emerged. 3. an indepth knowledge of one of the major theoretical approaches to personaility and individual differences.

Assessment: Theoretical essay (2500 words); 55% + Two 1-hour tests (2000 words): 45%

Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 1 hour lecture and 1 x 1 hour tutorial) per week
