Course description

The honours degree provides students with a recognised pathway to a higher degree by research. Through completion of the honours degree, students will acquire knowledge, competence, skills and attributes that will enhance their ability to promote professional midwifery and to lead and achieve in their chosen fields. Midwifery in contemporary health care settings requires practitioners who are highly trained professionals, technically competent and capable of problem identification, together with the application of research methods, within the practice environment.
Students undertaking the Bachelor of Midwifery are selected into the honours degree at the completion of the second year. From year three, students undertaking the honours degree in midwifery will begin taking research units alongside their remaining midwifery units.

Entry requirements

Completion of all requirements of the first and second years of the Bachelor of Midwifery degree or an equivalent standing in midwifery and an average of 70% (distinction) or higher over the first two years of the program. The head of the school may make a case for students with a grade average in the range of 65 to 69% who have demonstrated research potential. Students applying for admission based on midwifery qualifications other than the first two years of the Monash Bachelor of Midwifery program will need to demonstrate that they have completed units to an appropriate standard.
