Synopsis: This unit provides students with the opportunity to encounter a challenging research environment through the interaction of philosophical paradigms and extension of theoretical knowledge and acquisitions of skills to facilitate the undertaking of a research project. The unit will build upon knowledge gained in the second year unit Research in Nursing Practice.
Objectives: At the completion of the unit the students will be expected to: 1. evaluate and utilise appropriate philosophical foundations of research; 2. distinguish and critique quantitative and qualitative methodologies; and 3. develop and utilise research skills in the following areas:- a) advanced online searching b) documentation management c) data collection methods and analysis.
Assessment: Oral seminar paper on a research philosopher/philosophy: 30% + Data analysis exercise: 30% + essay/critique on research methodologies (2500 words): 40%
Prerequisites: NUR2401
