This course has been introduced to provide a combination generalist/specialist degree incorporating specific vocational education. Students will graduate with a full welfare qualification, recognised by the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers, plus a major and minor study in other disciplines.
All applicants are required to complete a social and community welfare course administration form, available from the School of Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences, or http://www.adm.monash.edu.au/ssd/sarb/seladmis/ug/. Applicants will be short-listed on the basis of information contained in this form. Short-listed, on-campus applicants will be invited to attend a compulsory interview in early December and must also apply through VTAC. Short-listed off-campus learning applicants may be required to do a telephone interview, depending on when they submit their application. Applicants are strongly advised that entry into the course is not solely on academic criteria. Other factors such as work and life experience, personal qualities and maturity are also taken into account.
Majors
and minors can be taken in Australian Indigenous studies, Australian studies,
communications, community studies, history-politics, Indonesian, journalism,
philosophy, psychological studies, psychology, public relations, sociology or
writing.

Students
must complete the following:
(a) the prescribed sequence in social welfare (84 points) comprising: SCW1302,
SCW1303, SCW1304, SCW1305, SCW2303, SCW2304, SCW2310/SCW3310, SCW2311, SCW2312,
SCW3303, SCW3304, SCW3306, SCW3307
(b) two compulsory supporting units (12 points) - chosen from either PSS1711*
or PSS1712* and either SCY1801 or SCY1802
(c) an arts major (48 points)
(d) an arts minor (24 points)
(e) a further 24 points of arts.
* The psychological studies units are provided to give an introduction to understanding our behaviour, which is particularly tailored to those students intending to proceed in the social community field. Students may choose to replace the psychological studies units with psychology units PSY1011 and PSY1022.
Note that students have a maximum of 10 years to complete this course.
This course is recognised by the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers.
