Course description

This course is designed to provide teachers with an understanding of a range of issues and an understanding of research as it relates to music education.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for admission to the course, applicants must hold either:

an approved three-year bachelors degree in a relevant field with a credit average in the final year, or
an approved three-year bachelors degree (or equivalent) and a fourth year of study, or
an approved four -year bachelors degree, or
qualifications or experience considered by the faculty board to be equivalent to, or a satisfactory substitute for, the above awards.

Course outline

Students are required to successfully complete 72 credit points comprising one of the following three options:

six units (option one), or
five units plus EDF6010/20 Professional project (8000 words - option two), or
four units plus a research thesis (16,000 words - option three).

(a) Students enrolled in (option 1) or who will be undertaking a professional project (option 2) must enrol in:
EDF6003 Interpreting research
(b) Students who will be undertaking a research thesis (option 3) as part of their degree must enrol in:
EDF6001 Embarking on research

Students are to choose at least one program elective unit selected from:

EDF6123 Developing the reflective practitioner
EDF6236 Language, society and cultural difference
EDF6441 Issues in educational multimedia
EDF6601 Studies in special education/inclusion

EDF6821 Policy and governance

Specialist elective units

Choose at least two units from:
EDF6322 Teaching music: policy and practice
EDF6323 Learning music: current research issues
EDF6324 European perspectives on music education

General elective units

Note that general electives do not need the course coordinator's approval unless under exceptional circumstances (ie if the student wishes to enrol in a unit from another faculty

Research thesis

The research core unit is a corequisite for the research thesis. It may be taken concurrently with the research thesis or completed prior to the commencement of the research thesis.

Note that not all units will be offered off-campus, and off-campus students are advised to discuss with their course coordinator what units are available.
