Synopsis: This unit focuses on an investigation of principles and practices of music education in selected European countries, focusing on traditions and methodologies that have had international influence. Students will consider the role of music in society and the institutions involved in music education as well as curriculum issues and methodologies in countries such as Germany, Austria and Hungary, focusing on the Kodaly, Orff and Dalcroze approaches to music education. An optional visit of approx 2-3 weeks to European countries, including a week of intensive workshops at the Kodaly Institute in Kecskemet, Hungary or the Orff Institute in Salzburg, Austria, is offered.

Objectives: Upon completion of this unit students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the origin, development and principles of the Kodaly, Dalcroze and Orff approaches to music education; compare these approaches and the extent to which they are compatible; consider how the principles of each approach might apply to the student's own teaching; be aware of adaptions and developments that have occurred when these approaches have been transferred to Australian and other educational environments.

Assessment: Two Essays (2 x 3000 words each): 60% + Report (4000 words) on application of pedagogy studied or reflective jopurnal maintained during participation in European tour: 40%
