Master of Japanese Interpreting and Translation (1.5-year program)

Course description

This program is designed for highly motivated students who wish to develop advanced competence in Japanese and English interpreting and translation. This course is suitable for both native and non-native speakers of Japanese.
Graduates should be able to operate as consecutive interpreters and translators at a high level of generalist professional competence. Graduates should also gain knowledge and understanding of the professional aspects of interpreting and translation and an advanced knowledge of theoretical concerns relevant to studies of interpreting and translation.

Entry requirements

The minimum requirement for entry is set for five groups:
(a) Native English applicants:

• Bachelors degree with completion of very advanced Japanese (Level 10 at Monash) with credit average or above equivalent, or
• Bachelors degree with credit average in the final year of any discipline and holds a certificate of the Japan Foundation's Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level 2 (Nihongo Nooryoku Shiken 2-Kyuu) or above.

(b) Native Japanese applicants:

• Monash entry requirements for international students will apply. This applies, apart from application of fees, also to native-Japanese applicants who hold permanent residency in Australia.

(c) Other than (a) or (b) above:

• Monash entry requirements for international students, and Japanese proficiency requirements as stipulated for native-English applicants in (a) above.

(d) Applicants with professional experiences in the relevant area:

• Bachelors degree with credit average in the final year of any discipline, and
• Demonstrable professional experience of minimum three years full-time equivalent at senior level in Japanese-English interpreting and translating. Applicants of this category will need to supply a CV, a 1000-word statement and the names of two professional referees.

(e) Applicants who have completed a similar course in the past or are currently undertaking one are required to submit a letter of reference from a teacher in that course.

Students complete 72 points including six core units and 24 points of electives chosen from the following list:

• JIT4200 Theory and practice of translation B (6 points)
• JIT4832 Translation of Japanese business documents (6 points)
• JIT4622 Interpreting B (6 points)
• JIT4621 Interpreting current events in Japanese and English B (6 points)
• JIT4843/JIT5843 Advanced theory and practice of translation (12 points)
• JIT4731/JIT5731 Theory and practice of Japanese interpreting (12 points)

Elective units

• JIT5842 Advanced Japanese interpreting
• JIT5940 Projects in Japanese interpreting and translation
• AST5680 Research project A
• TRN5060 Theoretical issues in translation studies A
• TRN5070 Theoretical issues in translation studies B

Minimum pass grade

To graduate with the Master of Japanese Interpreting and Translation, students must gain a credit (60 C) or above in core units and a minimum credit average overall.

Exit points

After successful completion of 24 points, students may apply to exit the program with a Graduate Certificate of Arts, or after successful completion of 48 points with a Postgraduate Diploma in Japanese Interpreting and Translation.
