Master of Occupational and Environmental Health

Course code: 2312 + Off-campus (Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Central and Eastern Clinical School, Alfred Hospital) + Full-fee-paying course: $TBC (Australian residents) (not available to international students)

The course is specifically designed to assist occupational health professionals in preventing and managing occupational health problems and provides the skills required to evaluate health problems in communities associated with industrial activities. It caters for the special needs of medical practitioners, nurses, allied health personnel, scientists and OHS managers. Graduates can seek careers in occupational medicine, nursing or management positions within industry, government or independent professional practice.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have an undergraduate degree in an appropriate discipline and relevant professional experience. The department will individually assess applications from students without a three-year degree but with relevant professional experience. In such instances, the department may require completion of the Graduate Certificate in Occupational Health or the Graduate Diploma in Occupational and Environmental Health before enrolling in the masters program.

Attendance

Most units have a 20-hour compulsory block of face-to-face teaching in Melbourne over four days during the semester. The teaching sessions involve interactive tutorials, problem-based learning, case studies and workshops. Experiential learning through worksite visits and student presentations is provided, as is the opportunity to increase understanding and application of the course material through discussion with unit experts and experienced practitioners.

Masters students are required to undertake the units MPH2040 (Introductory epidemiology) and MPH2041 (Introductory biostatistics), which are offered only on-campus.

Course structure

The Master of Occupational and Environmental Health comprises 72 credit points. It consists of six core and six elective units taken over either a 12 to 18-month period of three full-time semesters or a three-year period of six part-time semesters.
