Course code: 3402 + Off-campus (Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences, Clayton) + Full-fee-paying course: $TBC (Australian residents); $15333 (international students)
The course caters for radiographers and other science graduates currently practising sonography without formal qualifications who wish to gain a formal academic qualification in ultrasound. It will encourage students to develop a sound knowledge and understanding of embryology, anatomy, pathophysiology, as a solid foundation to ultrasound methodology. In collaboration with the faculties of Science and Law, students will receive a rigorous introduction to the physical principles of ultrasound, digital image processing and advanced reconstruction techniques. This collaborative approach enables the teaching of ethics, medico-legal principles, infection control, communication and the principles of history-taking to be appropriately contextualised in relation to the practice of ultrasound. The emphasis in the course is on clinical ultrasound. The areas of practice covered include abdominal, breast, thyroid, reproductive, obstetrics, musculoskeletal, paediatric and vascular ultrasound.
Applicants will generally be graduates of a degree program in radiography and medical imaging or equivalent, who have a minimum of 12 months postgraduation experience and have attained their Statement of Accreditation of the Australian Institute of Radiography. The Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences will individually assess applicants holding other qualifications.
The course consists of eight units completed over a minimum of two years part-time study (four 18-week semesters).
