Course code: 2314 + Off-campus (Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Central and Eastern Clinical School, Alfred Hospital) + Full-fee-paying course: $TBC (Australian residents); $25,500 (international students)
The course is specifically designed to provide the skills necessary to manage clinical health services systems. It provides a broad framework from which to manage clinical health care systems by attention to human resources, financial, information, medico-legal, political, cultural, economic, ethical, industrial, technological and psycho-social issues. The graduate diploma articulates with the Master of Health Services Management or the Master of Public Health.
Applicants must have an undergraduate degree in an appropriate discipline and relevant professional experience. The department will individually assess applications from students without a three-year degree but with relevant professional experience. In such instances, the department may require the completion of the Graduate Certificate in Health Services Management before enrolling in the graduate diploma.
Most units have a 15-hour compulsory block of face-to-face teaching in Melbourne during one week of the semester. Units are coordinated to allow students to attend the teaching sessions of two units in the same week. The teaching sessions are interactive and experiential and aim to discuss, clarify and reinforce the course content and assessment requirements. A number of guest lecturers who are recognised experts in the health services management field are involved. Block teaching is followed by weekly internet-based coursework for most units.
Students may undertake the units MPH2040 (Introductory epidemiology) and MPH2041 (Introductory biostatistics), which are offered only on-campus. These units are recommended for students wishing to undertake the masters program.
The course comprises 48 credit points. It consists of six core units and two elective units, taken over either a 12-month period of two full-time semesters or a 24-month period of four part-time semesters.
* Note: Units MPH2040 and MPH2041 are not available for study in off-campus learning mode. The units may be studied on-campus or equivalent units studied elsewhere as cross-institutional units.
Assessment consists of web-based tasks, assignment work, examinations, individual and group presentations.
