Business and Economics

Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Business and Commerce

Course code: 3511 + Course abbreviation: BSc/BBusCom + Off-campus (Gippsland) + Normally four years full-time or eight years part-time + Course coordinators: Associate Professor Philip Rayment (science), Dr Mindi Nath (business) + Total credit points required: 198 + Attendance compulsory for some units

The course has been designed to prepare students to work at a professional level in a scientifically oriented environment in which application of modern business techniques is required, or in a commercial environment in which a background in science or technology is desirable.

Majors and other studies in the degree

Students must complete a major in one of the following disciplines taught by the faculty: accounting, business law (off-campus learning only), economics, electronic business, human resource management, international business (off-campus learning only), management and marketing.
Other studies may be drawn from any of the disciplines offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics via the Gippsland campus. These other studies can form a professional specialisation in professional accounting, or a sub-major in finance, human resources, international management, services management and international marketing and commerce.
Students must also complete a major sequence in one of the following disciplines taught by the Faculty of Science: applied biology, applied statistics, applied chemistry, mathematics and modelling, human physiology, psychology, and resource and environmental management.
All units studied must be from the Faculty of Business and Economics and the Faculty of Science.

Course structure

The degree requirements are:
(a) Students must complete 18 units (108 credit points) from the Faculty of Business and Economics as follows:
(i) Six compulsory units (36 credit points):

* Upon completion of the science unit STA1010 (section (b) (i) below), students will be given advanced standing for ETW1102.

(ii) A major of at least eight units (48 credit points) in a discipline from the faculty with at least two units (12 credit points) at each of second and third-year levels. All units taken as part of the major are limited to units taught by departments of the faculty on the campus delivering this program.
(iii) A maximum of eight first-year-level units (48 credit points).
(iv) A minimum of four units (24 credit points) at third-year level from those offered by the campus delivering this program.
(b) Students must complete 16 units (96 credit points) from the Faculty of Science as follows:
(i) Two science core units (12 credit points):

(ii) One major sequence and one minor sequence from the approved science discipline sequences (excluding computing) as defined in the Bachelor of Science entry
(iii) One first-year-level science unit (six credit points) from a discipline other than those studied under parts (ii).
(c) Students must also satisfy the following degree regulations:
(i) Overall, a maximum of 14 units (84 credit points) of first-year-level units.
