Synopsis:

Objectives: On successful completion of this unit, students will: 1.be familiar with the salient ideas and methodologies of semiotics, and how these may contribute to an understanding of art and design; 2.possess skills enabling them to analyse visual images and evaluate the strengths, weakness and biases of the various media of popular culture; 3.have an awareness and understanding of their cultural roles and responsbilities as professional communicators in today's society.

Assessment: Tutorial paper: 50% + Essay: 50%

Contact Hours: 2 hours lecture/seminar and one tutorial per week

Prerequisites: 2 second-year TAD units
