Foreign Aid and World Development B (6 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: On completing this subject, students should be able to understand, analyse and assess the major philosophical and empirical arguments for and against foreign aid; understand the major trends in the theory and practice of foreign aid; understand the work of aid agencies; and engage in reasoned analysis and debate on the numerous contested issues in this field of study. Fifth year students should acquire a deeper knowledge of the working of and relations between non-government aid organizations.

Assessment: Fourth year level students essay (2,000 words): 60% + Oral presentation (500 word equivalent): 10% + Examination (2 hours; 2,000 word equivalent): 30%

Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 2 hour seminar) per week
