Synopsis:

Objectives: The aim of component 1 of this subject together with its sequel in semester 2 is to enhance their ability to recognise and analyse different types of texts in terms of their internal structures and their functions in the contexts in which they were produced and received; to develop their German language skills in the areas of reading, listening, speaking and writing; to acquire skills in researching, both individually and collaboratively, and in presenting the results of their research and reflection in both written and verbal form. After completion of component 2 students should also have gained a) an overview of some basic aspects of German social and cultural history in its European context; b) the ability to recognise and analyse a variety of texts in accordance with the categories of their historical origin and context; c) reading skills necessary to understand intermediate German; d) basic orientation about essay-writing and academic discussion of aspects of German culture on an advanced level.

Assessment: Essay (1000 words): 20% : Class paper: 15% + Test (45mins): 15% + Exam (1 hour): 20% + 4 homework exercises: 20% + Oral assessment: 10%

Contact Hours: 6 hours (2 x lectures, 1 x seminar and 3 x tutorials) per week

Prerequisites: VCE German or equivalent
