Introduction to Cultural Studies (6 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: 1. To introduce students to some aspects of contemporary discussion of the relationship between 'elite' and 'popular' culture. 2. To explore a variety of ways in which 'mass market' cultural products can usefully be discussed. 3. To provide students with some of the critical skills necessary to analyse those aspects of contemporary culture that are typically ignored by high literary criticism. 4. To enable students to understand, feel comfortable with and be able to articulate the analytical skills, theoretical vocabularies and conceptual apparatuses studied. 5. To develop in students a sense of their own personal and cultural reflexivity as they observe and interpret the cultural forms and productions analysed in the unit.

Assessment: One essay (2000 words): 40% + Examination (2 hours): 40% + Tutorial work: 20%

Contact Hours: 3 hours (2 x 1 hour lectures and 1 x 1 hour tutorial) per week
