Synopsis:

Objectives: Students successfully completing this subject will have acquired: 1. familiarity with a range of sign systems, textual structures, and literary genres; 2. a basic competence in textual analysis and literary interpretation; 3. an introductory understanding of the relations between a text and its cultural and social contexts; 4. foundational skills in academic essay writing in the area of literary and cultural studies.

Assessment: Essay (1000 words): 30% + Exam 2 hours: 25% + Practical work (1500 words): 35% + Tutorial participation 10%

Contact Hours: 3 hours (2 x 1 hour lectures and 1 x 1 hour tutorial) per week
