Biomedical basis of disease 1 (6 points)

Synopsis:

Objectives: By studying and understanding relevant examples of human physiology and disease in the areas of women's reproductive health, child health and disease, infection and malignancy 1. To understand the normal reproductive processes and how these processes are dysregulated in infertility and manipulated contraception 2. To understand how the study of disease processes relates to human disease 3. Understand how clinical features, epidemiological context and diagnosis and treatment are relevant to disease 4. Understand how experimental medicine, including cell biology, animal models of disease and human studies are important in defining the pathogenesis of disease and optimal treatment of disease 5. Following from objectives 1 to 4, develop insight into identifying current inadequacies in knowledge and future challenges in disease pathogenesis and treatment 6. Understand the impact disease has on the individual and society 7. Develop skills in team work and communication

Assessment: Written examination: 58% + Satisfactory attendance and participation in seminars and debates 2% + Group seminar: 20% + Scientific Paper Critique: 10% + Scientific Debate: 10%

Contact Hours: 6 hours per week

Prerequisites: BMS2011, BMS2021, BMS2031, BMS2042, BMS2052 and BMS2062
