Synopsis:

Objectives: On completion of this subject students should: 1. Be familiar with a range of approaches to interpersonal communication and human relationships. 2. Be aware of the differences between communication theories that relate to interpersonal and group situations. 3. Be able to initiate, maintain and terminate a basic interview, demonstrating attendance, empathy and congruence. 4. Be able to demonstrate skills in assertion and conflict management. 5. Be able to facilitate a simple group activity. 6. Be able to formulate in writing personal statements about themselves in relation to the material presented in the unit. 7. Students taking this unit at the third year level should at its conclusion be able to demonstrate basic qualitative research skills and present coherent research findings.

Assessment: Insight journal (1500 words): 25% + Individual journal of groupwork (1500 words): 25% + Research project and tutorial presentation (2500 words): 50%

Contact Hours: 2 hours (1 x 1 hour lecture and 1 x 1 hour tutorial) per week

Prerequisites: Any of GSC1711, GSC1712, BHS1320, BHS1340, PSY1011, PSY1022 or equivalent
