Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Social and Community Welfare

Course code: 1806 + Gippsland, off-campus learning + Administered by the Faculty of Arts

Objectives

This course has been introduced to provide a combination generalist/specialist degree incorporating specific vocational education. Students will graduate with a full welfare qualification, recognised by the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers, plus a major and minor study in other disciplines.

Entry requirements

Refer to the `Entry requirements' under `Arts regulations and definitions' earlier in this section. For additional requirements, refer also to the `Entry requirements' under the Bachelor of Social and Community Welfare entry.

Professional recognition

This course is recognised by the Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers.

Course structure

A candidate for the double degree must fulfil the following requirements to receive the awards of Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Social and Community Welfare:
(a) the prescribed sequence in social welfare (84 points) (see entry under Bachelor of Social and Community Welfare earlier in this section)
(b) two compulsory units (12 points) - chosen from either BHS1711* or BHS1712* and either SCY1801 or SCY1802
(c) an arts major (48 points)
(d) an arts minor (24 points)
(e) a further 24 points of arts
(f) a total of 192 points.

* The behavioural studies units are provided to give an introduction to understanding our behaviour, which is particularly tailored to those students intending to proceed in the social community field. Students may choose to replace the behavioural studies units with psychology units PSY1011 and PSY1022.

Arts majors and minors

Majors and minors can be taken in Australian Indigenous studies, Australian studies, behavioural studies, community studies, history-politics, Indonesian, journalism, communications, psychology, public relations, sociology or writing (details on each discipline are provided under the entry for the School of Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences).
